Through the entire book ‘Of Mice and Men’, Steinbeck portrays the character of Curley’s wife because unfortunate and a bit of a great outcast. ‘Well you keep from her, trigger she’s a rattrap when I noticed one’. But for what level can the lady be thought to be a tragic character? The first time we learn about Curley’s partner, she is identified as a ‘tart’ by one more farm member of staff. This is because she’s lonely thus she hangs around the different farm staff wearing ‘red mules’ with ‘red ostrich feathers’ and ‘red finger nails’.

Steinbeck uses the colour red to demonstrate she is dressing like a ‘tart’ because the coloring red at the moment was linked to prostitutes. ‘I ain’t hardly ever seen nobody like her’. The ranch hands, however , want nothing to do with her, and so they ignore her, and so she turns into an outcast. ‘Curley’s partner can sure move peaceful. I guess she’s had a wide range of practice, though’.

The reason they cannot want to be found with her is because she is married to Curley, a ‘pugnacious’ tiny man, who will be very possessive. ‘”Have you seen a female around below? ” this individual demanded angrily’. The fact that Steinbeck hardly ever gave Curley’s wife a name other than ‘Curley’s wife’ is to demonstrate that the girl belongs to Curley. It shows her while his ownership rather than a separate person. To get focus, she decorates and weighs around the employees when Curley is not really there.

Yet , none in the farm staff want to fight with Curley, because he may be the boss’ son and could buy them fired. ‘She looked from one face to a new, and they had been all shut against her’. Curley’s wife seems miserable in her marriage. ‘I don’t like Curley. He ain’t an excellent fella’.

He treats her badly, although he is wedded, he even now goes to a ‘cathouse’, and she knows this ‘Think I don’t know in which they ing went? Even Curley! ‘ She also admits she is completely happy that Curley got ‘bust up’, because she resents Curley to get the isolation and for staying ‘stick in that house alla time’. Curley’s wife is without children to keep her entertained or keep her firm, and she has nothing to perform with her time.

Steinbeck uses dialect to show how frustrated she actually is at becoming unloved and unwanted. ‘Wha’s the matter with me? ‘. Even when she is deceased she is ignored by Curley, who is even more angry that someone “broke” HIS possession than the reality his wife is deceased. ‘I’ll eliminate the big son-of-a-bitch! ‘ Curley’s wife usually spends most of her time scheming ways to get interest and organization from the various other men. You will find no additional women for the ranch, which is because men’s lifestyles during the time meant they were always traveling and never satisfied down and got married.

This is why none of the other ranch personnel have spouses for her to talk to, and therefore no-one else around the ranch recognizes her, or perhaps her situation. ‘Ranch which has a bunch of folks on it ain’t no place for any girl, specially like her! ‘ Throughout the book, someone does learn a little about Curley’s wife’s past, and about how a man ‘who was in the pitchers’ said having been ‘gonna set [her] in the movies’ when he was back in Hollywood, and just how she under no circumstances received the letter. Curley’s wife says that your woman thought her ‘ol’ female stole it’, and this displays the reader how nave and simply led the girl with, and also the cause she was so desperate to leave home, and why the lady married Curley.

Even though Curley’s wife is so lonely and craving attention, she is continue to rude and has a short temper, and throughout almost all of the book is usually not well-liked by the reader. ‘ you keep your house then nigger. I could obtain you strung up on a forest so conveniently it ain’t even funny’. ‘She required, “You listenin’ to me? “‘.

When she is left by itself with the ‘weak ones’ your woman treats these people badly, like she is applying for her frustration on them. ‘ Standin’ below talking to lots of bindle stiffs – a nigger, an’ a dum-dum an’ a lousy ol’ sheep, an’ liking it cause presently there ain’t no one else! ‘ She is envious that despite the fact that she counts them as the ‘weak ones’, some can talk to the different men, and are also not all pressured into the same solitary confinement that the girl with in. Steinbeck shows just how tragic this character can be, by the fact that she has to take her anger out on people she very little counts while ‘weak’, and that is how unhealthy her way of living has made her.

Finally once she has died, Steinbeck uses language to demonstrate just how tragic she is, possibly in loss of life. ‘All the meanness as well as the planning and discontent as well as the ache intended for attention’ had been all absent from her face. This kind of extract provides us clues as to what Curley’s wife what thinking although she was alive, and how much of her life these items took up. That explains her behaviour and finally makes the reader feel sorry on her, because inside the rest of the book this is hard, despite her tragically awful situation. I think that Curley’s wife is an incredibly tragic character.

The truth that your woman was thus desperate to break free from home that she wedded Curley, and she was so nave and had no-one to tell her and advise her that it was such an awful idea. Also the girl had simply no purpose anytime, no one to talk to, or to like and handle her very well, that your woman turned thus sour and bitter that she ruined the handful of moment s of business that she could take at. However, fact she’s not adored and wished by the visitor and is known as ‘trouble’. The only time her worries and problems are more than is in fatality!

These are all reasons to show to the large extent that Curley’s better half was been shown to be a tragic character.
