Innocence, chastity, purity, and married life are just a few things that made up the ‘image’ of the nineteenth century Even victorian woman. During this period, it was tremendously looked straight down upon when a woman decided to stay one, as she’d be pitied and named a “whore. Lucy Westenra is one of the key characters in the novel, Dracula by Bram Stoker. Lucy is a gorgeous young lady in whose innocence and virtuous staying draws three suitors with her.

Although, this kind of portrayed purity is not really the only thing that is drawing these men towards her.

Lucy provides a sexual appeal to her persona, much different than her closest friend Mina Murray and the normal Victorian woman. This feeling of sexual desire will sooner or later lead her right into the dangerous and evil arms of Rely Dracula. The Count simply has the ability to harm willing subjects, which is why the sexually driven Victorian woman, Lucy Westenra is the 1st character to be victimized by simply Dracula’s lethal spell.

Count Dracula was an nasty, lustful goule who needed nothing but power and control. He occupied an Far eastern European nation called, Transylvania. The Count number preyed upon any individual who would make him feel in control and powerful of the situation. This is why Sharon Westenra was targeted to make Dracula’s first victim. The first distinct account Sharon and Mina experience was when they view a Russian dispatch wrecked near the shore and hear that the there was no life on-board and the captain had passed away holding a crucifix in his hands. Immediately after the account, Lucy began mysteriously sleeping walking a large number of night in a row in the grave yard near her home. One particular night, Mina had awoken the Rowatt 3

locate Lucy lacking and not in her foundation, she then found her outside which has a creature with beaming red eyes hunched over her. Mina tried to save her friend although by the time your woman got more than there, the creature was gone. Each morning Mina had found unusual dots in Lucy’s neck of the guitar and after struggling for several weeks Lucy started to be deathly unwell and begun to change just before everyone’s sight.

Unknowingly, she was transforming into a very natural and dangerous type of herself while dead and lying within a cold serious. “Indeed, it is not only Sharon and Sl?ktens who happen to be dramatically converted in the depleting, but Dracula himself, whose transformations are more varied and intricate than those of his victims. (Pg. 238, Viragh) Count Dracula had stripped this girl of her innocence and virtue by simply changing her to an evil vampire exactly like him. Dracula now experienced control over Sharon but because she was willing to let him control her.

In the nineteenth century, straying off away from who a woman should certainly be in line with the Roman Catholic Church is definitely heresy. Women was never to be with several man, unfortunately he to be hitched and entirely faithful to her partner. This century was ruled by “the idea that an person’s sex and sexuality make up the most basic primary of their identification, potentiality, social/political standing, and freedom (Pg. 1, Ridgway) Lucy Westenra had a completely different mindset since she expressed in a page to her special friend Mina. “Why won’t be able to they let a girl marry three guys, or up to want her, and preserve all this difficulty? (Pg. 66, Stoker) After Lucy states these words in her notification, she instantly admits with her thoughts and actions being heresy. Just because she revealed Rowatt 5

to this desprovisto against the church and her beliefs will not simply relieve Lucy’s sexual desire. This big difference between Sharon and other nineteenth century desired women was not just a stage of rebellion, it was mental. Lucy is fully aware that she is preferred by many men and the lady lets that get into her head, essentially she is nourishing off the focus. This weeknesses and visibility is why Sharon Westenra is Count Dracula’s first and easiest concentrate on. The first time the Count begins to get into Lucy’s head is after her and Ganga see the destroyed boat after shore, containing the containers of dirt and grime. These were Dracula’s sleeping quarters. This fact was not known by the ladies at the time, although soon after this is when ever Lucy starts to sleep walk.

This rest walking is definitely not a chance but can be psychologically linked to her guilty desires of lustfulness. Count Dracula only has the power the attack prepared victims, which could only suggest Lucy recognized in her subconscious what she was doing simply by going out to the cemetery at nights. This cause Dracula puts on Lucy is definitely the same spell he placed on the three women who now your life in Dracula Castle with him. These women were just as innocent and desired as Lucy was and are also now love-making crazed and evil in the same way the Count is. This “spell was a way to undermine girls so that Dracula would think powerful and controlling above them.

Essentially, Lucy Westenra was a seemingly virtuous nineteenth century Victorian woman who have actually had underlying lovemaking desires. These desires made Lucy vulnerable to Count Dracula, who was consumed with increasing control over his victims. As a result of her lustful manor, Lucy was drawn to the attack of Dracula and fell under his deep cause. From then on there was clearly no turning back.
