Conclusion

This novel was written more than 40 years ago and predicted the feminist movement by simply several years. Atwood uses Marion’s struggles with eating like a metaphor of revolt and protest. Trough this tale, Marian looks at and rejects the tasks presented to her by contemporary society and also rejects the dominance, superiority of cultural conventions in order to achieve self-identity and self-knowledge and self-awareness. Marion gives hope to these women by demonstrating the qualities of strength needed to protect her own individuality.

Atwood’s book shows the lady believes all women have this inner strength, emphasizing the hardships that daily activities provide and underscoring the proposition that all girls are able to fully stand up for themselves but not succumb to the preconceptions that they can must be mild, soft-spoken and submissive.
