NATION ON WHEELS

Country on Wheels” is a thorough look at the varied history of the auto in America. Even though the book ostensibly covers the time in the auto’s development by 1945 in, the author starts by “setting the stage” for the automobile’s amazing history and impact on the United States by illustrating how horseless carriages came into being, and exactly how the petroleum industry played out such a sizable and lucrative part inside the development of the first autos. He also includes other national and intercontinental developments that had essential and long lasting effects for the auto market, from advancement a countrywide Interstate highway system, to World War II and the growth of suburbia and commuting after the warfare. Other influences on the automobile, such as mass transit, environmental pollution, hardship in the car industry, and the transformation from the auto sector in the nineties are also included, because this publication is a complete history of the miraculous equipment, and how come Americans are extremely enamored with their automobiles. To help make the book finish, the author contains his eye-sight of the future with the automobile, which include safety and speed problems, and how to lessen commutes. Ultimately, this book is somewhat more than a good the automobile, it is just a telling great American society, and how based mostly we have become on our much-beloved cars. The author will do a masterful job of conforming this information in a short volume level that holds a wide variety of historic and compelling information while still having to his main thesis; how the car affected People in the usa and the way we live.

In the Preface, the author claims his thesis quite plainly. “Therefore, We attempted to give much of the necessary flavor of the automobile’s influence on various areas of American existence. Still I had developed to keep some seasonings out” (Foster viii). There are many historic volumes revealed the automobile, yet non-e that illustrate world and the auto bound together so strongly. Foster also discusses how autos have got influenced American music and films, and acknowledges, “The automobile has been an incredibly highly effective, aggressive shaper of American lifestyle. Few facets of American life are immune from its impact” (Foster viii). Filled with stories, research, and a few amazing insights, Foster handles to perpetuate his thesis while composing an entertaining and enjoyable read. The American automobile is much more than transportation in our society; this can be a status mark, rolling extra room, and a romantic hideaway. How this got to end up being that way, and what it says about us while Americans might not always be set up and agree with, but it is certainly interesting and informative.

Naturally , even though the thesis is well thought out and offered clearly, much like any newsletter, this book gives strengths and weaknesses to the reader. Mcdougal uses huge detail and research to back up his thesis about the auto and society, and brings up a lot of interesting factors, such as how a car has affected our leisure time. Today, it seems like all of us spend too much amount of time in our car, but when great roads and faster automobiles developed, households could in fact drive with their vacation spots, seeing a lot more of the nation along the way. Because the author notes, “For People in the usa sightseeing in their own country, the automobile provided an attractive and interesting alternative to the conventional, predictable holidays they had knowledgeable in the past” (Foster 23). This was an appealing thought that hadn’t occurred to me, yet made sense after I browse Foster’s thoughts and illustrations. He evidently expands within this thought later on in the book when he discusses the way the car created the roadside conventional hotel that still exists today, and has expanded to incorporate the airport side resort, ready for any kind of traveler simply by land or air. This in only an example of many that illustrate just how Foster backs his suggestions with study and crystal clear illustrations to generate his level. Unfortunately, not all of his reasoning is so clear
