How many people do you face each day who considers themselves to be a righteous person? Do you agree or disagree with this persons judgement that belongs to them character? Normally a person might hide in back of his or her religion as a reason for the actions produced in every day life.

Most likely some people may decide that commiting enough positive actions can a lot of how block out their bad actions, allowing them to consider themselves a righteous person. In Flannery O’Connors story A Good Gentleman Is Hard To Find, the writer challenges her readers to consider what it truly means to certainly be a good man and so why these qualities are so difficult to find in a person. As the story opens were introduced to a grandmother who is having an external conflict with her friends and family over the getaway location they may have chosen.

The grandmother considers very highly of their self and her decisions, and so she starts to try and shape her family members into saying yes with her on going to another place. Mcdougal hints to us which the grandmother believes highly of herself by the way that the lady descibes her clothing for the reader. Your woman picks away her clothes based upon her thoughts that In case of an accident, anyone seeing her lifeless on the highway knows at once that she was obviously a lady. (Paragraph 12) Someone can only speculate why such a self righteous woman could be therefore focused on the opinions more even in her thoughts of what bodes.

The grandma also selfishly brings along her cat in secrecy, while her son Bailey didn’t like to reach a motel with a cat. (Paragraph 10) She places herself to such importance that your woman does not believe that she needs to listen to her sons needs, but rather do what your woman wants to. Your woman scolds your children about the way they act in a vehicle and says that the girl herself would not act because manner, which will also implies the fact that she thinks of himself as a righteous person. Right after scolding the kids for their actions, the grandmother points out children to the relatives with the words and phrases Oh go through the cute little pickaninny (Paragraph 18) which explains to the reader that she is talking about the child simply by his or her skin tone.

She possibly uses the childs skin tone to pass a judgement that as a little nigger he probably did not own any britches. (Paragraph 19-20) Mcdougal uses this as even more evidence to the reader the fact that grandmother feels of herself as superior to others, by simply her skin color. She carries on throughout the tale to attempt to adjust her family with stories of a huge house that she wanted to go back and visit. The more she tells of the house, the greater fired up the children become regarding going to it and they begin to make a fuss for their parents.

The grandmother is pleased with this kind of and continues to feed the fireplace she has integrated the children, while she understands it is creating distress to her son. Older people woman even offers up small suggestions declaring that the visit to the house will be very educational for them (Paragraph 53) in an attempt to declare anything in order that she can to get her personal way. Following she has finally got her way, the grandmother finally realizes that she was so caught up in what the lady wanted that she had not correctly recalled the location of the home.

At the realization that somebody like her has made an error, she becomes embarrassed and her feet jump up. This is when we see another one of her selfish actions return to haunt her, since the feline becomes stunned and causes the grandmothers kid Bailey to reduce control of the vehicle. Through her horrible actions, the granny has induced her family members to damage their car and put them all in danger but yet she has not any remorse to apologize for her mistakes.

Someone Bailey’s difficulty would not fall on her all at once. (Paragraph 67) Even with all of the trouble this lady has caused the elderly woman is very concerned with the belief that she is a fantastic person that the girl uses that as a reason for her wrongdoings. It is not until the family is faced with a legal who calls himself The Misfit the truth in back of the grandma really concerns the surface. The grandmother immediately recognizes him and ignorantly calls him out on his identity, which will puts her family into more hazard than before.

Her son Cromwell is so upset with his mother at this point that he says something to his mom that stunned even the children (Paragraph 85) and it might be even more evident that the girl has been provocing angry emotions from her family at present. Even the kids have made remarks towards the girl throughout the tale, which is a disastrous blow once even your own family features negative emotions towards you. During all of the reactions from her family, the grandmother still continues to act in her common selfish ways. When she is encountered up against The Misfit, the grandmother starts trying to adjust him just like she has completed her family.

She tries to persuade him into relying that the girl believes him to be a good man in heart. (Paragraph 91) At this point the grandma has always been capable of manipulate individuals around her, but The Misfit proves being not so quickly fooled by her. The grandmother even begins to try to use her religion in an effort to persuade The Misfit in to letting her go. The elderly woman makes the remark to him that If you will pray Christ would help you(Paragraph 119), but The Misfit can easily see through what the grandmother pretends being.

The grandmother has always believed their self to be a righteous person, nevertheless she has not proven their self to be one through her actions. This lady has not described the Lord until she is confronted with a circumstances of certain desperation and this is clear to The Misfit. He never claimed to become a devout person but it can be shown in his talks of Jesus with the woman that he features thought long and hard about religion. There is a glimmer of hope inside the thoughts from the Misfit that allow the visitor to believe that, in the slightest instant, he could actually be a good person if offered the right advice. The Misfit seems like hes taking into consideration religion at one stage, but the granny pulls him away from this more with her insencerity.

She goes from speaking to him about relying on Jesus and starts offering him money in exchange for her existence, which is something which crushes every possible visions of her being a truly faithful woman. Though they can see her for whom she is, the thoughts of faith can still be observed bouncing about in his mind a bit which becomes obvious to her grandma as well. The lady sees that there is a possibility of a good person in the guy who your woman described before as a criminal whom she would not take her children to. (Paragraph 1) This makes the grandmother wide open her eyes to her own life and she starts to realize that your woman doesn’t need to be the selfish person she gets been, although her understanding comes too late.

Inside the line She would of been an excellent woman if it had been an individual there to shoot her every minute of her life (Paragraph 141) we see which the Misfit noticed the difference in her in her previous moments, although that these last moments can never cover the evidence of who the lady had always been before. The grandmother spent way too much amount of time in her lifestyle focusing on exactly what a university good person the lady was, rather than reflecting within the actions the lady took. The irony of the story is that there exists more good seen in the sincerety from the Misfit, instead of in the granny who thought so highly of herself. Any person can claim to be considered a righteous person and shape those surrounding them into thinking this to become true.

Although in the end, everything comes down to the evaulation with the actions that a person makes as to whether or perhaps not they will truly always be classified like a good person. It is noticeable by the end with the story that the good man is hard to look for simply because a lot of people are going about claiming being one themselves.
