R. S. Jones was a clergyman from Wales born in 1913. He attended school in Cardiff and later became a member of the Welsh National Party (Plaid Cymru). In 1965 he won the Observer poems Prize. Thomas was a poet who appeared to base his work on what he seen and believed in. The two poems i will look for are Lore and Cynddylan on a Tractor. The word lore means data passed down by simply word of mouth.

The poems present Thomass opinions on the aged and the fresh. Lore is based on an 80 five yr old Welshman called Job Davies. Immediately we see the faith based side of Thomas as he uses a biblical name pertaining to the character this individual has discussed. Both the poems are presented in a formatting that makes these people feel conversational and personal for the reader. This can be achieved in Lore by utilizing enjambment inside the first two lines in the first strain to remove the rhyme and turn the beautifully constructed wording to chat

Job Revealed, eighty fiveWinters old, but still aliveThe brand Cynddylan is usually Welsh to get brave soldier. Both poems are securely set in the context in the Welsh gardening background and the poets consternation regarding the mechanisation of farming and the resultant impoverishment in the land and people. Although in this case Thomas is using it to gain sardonic effect. This is a metaphor that is describing the wonderfully fiery colours that the early morning growing sun turns all the hedgerows along the fields.

The final complainte in the poem Lore is Thomas skillfully giving guidance to the visitor. He does this by requesting the Rhetorical question to Job, What to do? The advice that Job provides comes in the proper execution of, Stay green, Never mind the device, Whose fuel is man souls. This last point is a very significant metaphor used by Thomas in both the poetry. It is found again in Cynddylan On the Tractor when it is rephrased to, Who operates his engine on a different fuel.

Those two dramatic metaphors are a very profound look at by Thomas to warn people to destruction he perceives mechanisation may cause, not only to the Welsh landscape but to a persons. He is leaving clues that the equipment eats up the humans style and nature to make all part of the machine. The last line of the poem Lore is a Aphorism and it is a continuation of the advice that Job offers. It says live significant, man, and dream tiny. Here Jones is telling the reader to have to life total potential yet do not fantasise about what could be. Cynddylan On A Tractor alternatively finishes with all the rhyming stance, All the birds will be singing, expenses wide in vain, As Cynddylan goes by proudly the lane.

The first line of this couplet is metaphorically saying that regardless of what is said to stop the advance of mechanisation it will eventually all be in vain. The second line then simply is a last sardonic comment about Cynddylan. The poems written by Jones are of the very high quality as he uses a wide range of poetic strategies and this individual cleverly installs his tips and morals throughout thePoems. To make the poetry so impacting on the target audience and to include a strong comparison between the two characters he used a medieval technique known as the great and the complaint. Here Job Davies is the perfect and Cynddylan is the complaint.
