Steinbeck was born upon February twenty-seven, 1902, in Salinas, Washington dc. He was of German, English language, and Irish descent.  Johann Adolf Großsteinbeck (1828–1913), Steinbeck’s protector grandfather, reduced the friends and family name to Steinbeck if he immigrated to america. The friends and family farm in Heiligenhaus, Mettmann, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, remains named Großsteinbeck. His dad, John Ernst Steinbeck (1862–1935), served since Monterey State treasurer. John’s mother, Olive Hamilton (1867–1934), a former university teacher, distributed Steinbeck’s interest for reading and writing.  The Steinbecks had been members with the Episcopal House of worship,although Steinbeck after became variable.
 Steinbeck lived in a small rural town, at most a frontier settlement, set in some of the world’s most suitable for farming land.  He put in his high seasons working on close by ranches and later with migrant workers on Spreckels sugar beet facilities. There he learned from the harsher aspects of the migrant life as well as the darker part of being human, which delivered him with material indicated in such works as Of Mice and Men. He visited New York City where he took peculiar jobs although trying to create. When he failed to publish his work, he returned to California and worked in 1928 as being a tour guide and caretaker at Lake Tahoe, where he attained Carol Henning, his first wife.  They committed in January 1930 in Los Angeles, where, with good friends, he attemptedto make money simply by manufacturing plast typer mannequins. Once their money sold out six months later due to a slow marketplace, Steinbeck and Carol shifted back to Pacific Grove, California, to a holiday cottage owned by simply his father, on the Monterey Peninsula a few blocks away from Monterey metropolis limits.
The older Steinbecks offered John cost-free housing, daily news for his manuscripts, and from 1928, loans that allowed him to write with out looking for function. During the Great Depression, Steinbeck purchased a small vessel, and later stated that he was able to survive the fish and crab that this individual gathered from your sea, and fresh vegetables from his back garden and local facilities. When all those sources failed, Steinbeck and his wife acknowledged welfare, and rare occasions, stole bread from the neighborhood produce industry.  Whatsoever food they had, they shared with their good friends.  Carol became the model to get Mary Talbot in Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row. 
In 1930, Steinbeck attained the underwater biologist Impotence Ricketts, who also became a close friend and mentor to Steinbeck through the following decade, teaching him a great deal about philosophy and biology.  Ricketts, generally very silent, yet likable, with a great inner self-sufficiency and a great encyclopedic knowledge of diverse topics, became a spotlight of Steinbeck’s attention. Ricketts had taken a college course from Warder Clyde Allee, a biologist and environmental theorist, would you go on to create a classic early on textbook on ecology. Ricketts became a proponent of environmental thinking, through which man was only one component to a great cycle of being, captured in a web of lifestyle too large intended for him to manage or understand.  At the same time, Ricketts controlled a biological lab around the coast of Monterey, advertising biological samples of small pets, fish, rays, starfish, frogs, and other marine forms to schools and colleges. Among 1930 and 1936, Steinbeck and Ricketts became close friends. Steinbeck’s partner began functioning at the lab as secretary-bookkeeper. 
Steinbeck helped by using an informal basis.  They formed one common bond depending on their love of music and skill, and David learned biology and Ricketts’ ecological viewpoint.  Once Steinbeck started to be emotionally annoyed, Ricketts occasionally played music for him.
