Aristotle developed of 3 appeals pertaining to existence: cast, pathos and logos, all of these are prevalent in all forms of writing, entertainment, speech, and generally life itself. Fredrick Douglass used all three appeals on paper his narrative as part of his rhetorical technique to enlighten the public of equally his lifestyle and his cause more than one hundred years ago. He specifically uses ethos, or perhaps persona, in three ways: to recognize himself for the reader, to supply to the reliability of his statement and also to evoke a need for change through his writing design.

Fredrick Douglass increases from a slave young man to a separated man throughout Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, an American Servant and this individual uses this kind of transition and identity to supply an outlet that the reader can identify. Douglass first generates this together with the absence of date ranges.

Slaves were kept ignorant as to the facts from the real world, at times not even knowing the year of their birth, stopping the knowledge of any captives accurate age. A birthday can be something with which people can identify, as they are a celebrated part of the west, especially to youth. Douglass here recognizes himself like a human being practically lacking what we should may think about a normal child years simply by using dates. These are very important to our culture, counting over the days until your birthday, until Christmas. We identify ourselves by dates which surround the events of our lives. Part of our identity is created from dates and this was obviously a privilege he was denied.

He is, however , eventually presented a window of opportunity in several to not simply learn times, but gain a general experience for understanding as well. When the open door of learning that his mistress supplied was forever closed, he says, it was a fresh and particular revelation, explaining dark and mysterious items, with which my personal youthful understanding had had trouble, but fought in vain. I now understood what have been to me a most complicated difficulty-to humor, the light mans capacity to enslave the black guy. It was a grand achievement and i also prized that highly. As a result moment We understood the pathway coming from slavery to freedom (Douglass 78).

Douglass was learning and he didnt want to provide it up.

The reader can see how much he appreciated knowledge and his ironclad can to keep that door wide open. In doing this, Douglass identifies himself as a growing child, required down by simply circumstances beyond his control. He is developing, he is learning, he is maturing, and such as a small child who demands question following question, he may not relax until his thirst pertaining to knowledge is quelled. As he gains more and more knowledge, his hunger and curiosity expand, and as he can satisfied in this aspect, his hunger for freedom grows. This becomes prevalent in the actions, as one of his Experts, Captain Auld put it, city life experienced almost messed up me for every good goal and fitted me to get everything which has been bad (Douglass 99). His experience brought on him to grow as being a person and individual.

An old clich states that knowledge is definitely power, Douglass had discovered this first hand and was growing in a person with all the courage to fight back and ultimately claim his freedom. Over the book, Douglass presents him self as a person, forced to overcome incredible boundaries to achieve that which will many of us take for granted through the tales he tells. He 1st ensures that you can identify with him prior to going into the innate details of a specific tale, hence ensuring whatever emotion he’s trying to stir up. It was also imperative that Douglass show his growth as a human being so that we would see him as that, a person, not a few animal to become easily dismissed.

Since Douglass was so well used, and his autobiography so well created, the hesitation surfaced in the mind of some target audience members as to whether or not really he had created the narrative or more for the extreme, whether or not he had basically been a slave. As a result, his reliability was referred to as into problem.

Douglass felt that Christianity was used by slaveholders to rationalize the

rudeness of their activities and to in some way purify them against the evilness of

all their hearts. He felt that being the slave of your Christian slaveholder was

while bad since slavery on its own. Were I to be once again reduced to the chains of

slavery, next to that enslavement, I should view being the slave of the

religious expert the greatest calamity that could hit me. (p. 731)

Douglas points out in his appendix the Christianity of Christ and

Christianity with this land are at opposite items on the range of good

and evil.

Douglass writes that the Christianity of Christ as being pure

and the Christianity of this area as being solely evil. (p. 749) Douglass

criticizes the Christian slaveholders of the same kind as the Pharisees and

Sadducees of Jesus period. They use all their religion to deceive themselves

and others of their truly wicked ways. Douglass describes all of them as

hypocrites that complete the pews on Saturday with their pious talk and loud

long prayer. We have men-stealers intended for ministers, women-worshippers for

missionaries, and cradle-plunderers for cathedral members.

(p. 749) Douglass

portrayed that the Christian slaveholders use Christianity as a tool to

show we were holding doing the work of God simply by driving out laziness or perhaps evilness

in the slaves. I really believe they also sensed they were in some way showing

compassion by having slaves who they will consider chattel or heathens and

giving a better your life of penitence for their savagery. Douglass I feel

believe in Christianity and I know he experienced he was call by The almighty to be more

than a servant and that he believed a keen intervention that led him through

your life. After examining his narrative, I believe he was more of a Christian

than his proclaimed slaveholders. His composing reflected I believe a sort

of pity toward them in this he did not depicted them as the animals I

believe that they really had been.
