Spanglish

Is the use of Spanglish seen as a term of “disparagement, ” as linguistics Professor Ricardo Otheguy asserts? Or is the blending of The english language into The spanish language “helpful” and “as usual as inhaling and as all-natural as existence itself” to the ethnic mix of Latinos and Anglos in Southern California and elsewhere, as journalist Kimberly Ortiz demands? This paper presents both equally sides of the concern; some admit using Spanglish as a cross types language is a bastardized type of British and The spanish language; others consider Spanglish, besides being here to stay, is properly legitimate as a substitute kind of dialect.

The Positives Relating to Spanglish

PBS NewsHour host Beam Suarez interviewed author Ilan Stavans about Stavans’ book, Spanglish: The Making of the New American Language. Stavans is the chief executive of Latin America and Latino traditions at Amherst College and he steadfastly defends Spanglish as a “way of interaction where a single starts in a single language, buttons to the other” and goes back and on or “perhaps coins some new words” along the way (PBS). Stavans provides that Spanglish is “a very imaginative jazzy way of being Latino in the U. S. today” (PBS).

Host Suarez queries whether Spanglish is truly a dialect, and to that Stavans answers that Spanglish may be inside the “process” of becoming a dialect. And Stavans adds that there is really not one single edition of Spanglish because Cuban Americans in Miami get their own particular version and Mexican-Americans have theirs too. He equates the different versions of Spanglish with the remarkable differences inside the Latino community: there are “a number of different Latinos” including the ones from Puerto Ricans heritage, of Mexican history, the Cubans and Venezuelans as well (PBS, p. 2).

Stavans makes a good stage when he says that every period another immigrant group comes in the U.
