At the begining of American culture, criminals that had been held simply by our government we accomplished, whipped, and held in a dark cell to get a short amount of time. The insane wandered around like a danger to themselves and people around them; plus the churches sentar took the poor. In the 1820s and 1830s there was progressively more criminals, lunatics, and the poor people. Reformers wanted to establish an official institute for them. The reformers believed that reform and rehabilitation was possible in a controlled environment.

The reformers had a couple of goals that they wanted to establish. They wanted more separating; the mentally ill kids should not be held together with the convicts. They also needed better prison grounds with better conditions. They desired the mistreatment to be reduced; no more whipping and other forms of torture.

They wanted alter. Dorothea Dix was a On the school teacher at the East Cambridge imprisonment. There, the lady was subjected to the terrible conditions they had to live with such as no heat, simply no separation involving the criminals, your children and the psychologically ill.

Dorothea was horrified with this and secured a the courtroom order to produce improvements. The lady wondered regarding other jails in Ma; so the girl traveled as well as the conditions were worse. She was therefore disturbed with what she saw she set out to reform prisons and asylums everywhere. Dorothea was a key factor in the reform. The lady helped trigger awareness towards the serious subject and the girl was accountable for the building of hospitals pertaining to the ridiculous. In 1835 The United States had two of the best prisons in Pennsylvania. Both the prisons had been a product from the on going reform and were both profitable. New York and Pennsylvania had the best prisons because they experimented with simple confinement, in which the criminal could reflect on all their sins but not be affected by different inmates.

Dorothea Dix, in March of 1841, trained a Sunday class to get woman at the East Cambridge Jail. This shows that the lady thinks that even if people are in prison or prison, that they are still people yet just need to end up being world with. The question we are looking for is if prisons had been meant for abuse or to help make these people better people for future years; future was a big problem at that time. Overall, most of these reformers’ goals had been met. They wanted change and they got it. They believed in something a lot with these kinds of passion that they actually altered American record; and that is whyAmerican justice strategy is one of the best.
