Excerpt from Term Paper:

Peyton Farquhar is definitely not a jewellry, but a wealthy plantation owner who had been attracted to the possibility of dignifying him self by being of service to the South during the civil conflict. Tricked with a federal look into trying to do something heroic for the South, he can about to hang up from the link that he intended to lose. Bierce identifies Farquhar’s knowledge as one of serious agony, then hope of survival. Farquhar feels destructive pain, but finds himself in the riv, escaping from the soldiers together with his senses “preternaturally keen and alert. Something in the terrible disturbance of his organic system experienced so hopeful and sophisticated them that they made record of things never prior to perceived”(Hopkins/Bierce 309. )

This is the first clue that something happens to be amiss, which Farquhar is not in the wonderful world of physical actuality.

Bierce’s imagination of the confusion, pain and altered claim that accompanies a violent loss of life is acutely honed. Inside the scene that continues with Farqhar’s get away from volleys of bullets, swimming over the river as well as the thrill of sand and gravel in the hands, Bierce gives us his impression of the previous encounter with hope in a dying person. Farquhar moves all day through the wild hardwoods, and views “great golden starts seeking unfamiliar and grouped in strange constellations”(Hopkins/Bierce 312). With this point in the storyline it is crystal clear that Farquhar is not really in a condition of fact, and it is verified when he all of a sudden sees his home and wife.

Naturally , the get away, the daylong journey throughout the strange woods and his face with his partner has just taken place in Farquhar’s mind in his previous seconds of life

The “occurrence” on the bridge is usually connected with Farquhar’s personal experience of a challenging death, but not with the hanging itself. Bierce wants his readers to find out that there is nothing at all noble or glamorous about dying for the cause. Loss of life in service into a cause offers no reward or reprieve, no matter how dedicated or well-intentioned its sufferer. Farquhar, in every his bravery, dedication, prosperity and dedication is lowered to having one last experience that evokes pity and apprehension on the part of someone, and does not give any impression of honor about the best sacrifice in war.

Regardless of Bierce’s message, he was incongruously attracted to war, as was his character, Farquhar.

Bierce stayed on in the army for many years sometime later it was in his your life, went to Mexico to combat alongside Pancho Villa, in which he finally vanished and was, perhaps, accomplished.
