Moby Dick, Personal Qualities

Self-Development: companionship cultivation

In Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick, Ishmael, the leading part, undergoes several stages in the development of his personal qualities. While Ishmael ventures further away of his comfort zone and experiences life-changing moments along with his newfound associate, Queequeg, Ishmael’s character is cultivated by an ignorant, ignorant person to a far more refined, mindful individual. Though Ishmael would not entirely look for refuge or camaraderie with other parties, Ishmael’s interaction with new people produced the theme of companionship as salvation coming from his unaware and judgmental nature.

Ishmael’s original ignorant nature after meeting Queequeg underscores the commencing development of the theme of companionship while salvation. After meeting Queequeg for the first time, Ishmael criticizes Queequeg’s appearance and behavior, which usually he continue to be do so till they get familiar with each other. Ishmael states that “[Queequeg] was just enough civil to show away his outlandishness in the oddest possible manners” (70). Ishmael’s statement obviously reveals how judgmental this individual already with the beginning of novel, declining the demonstrate any kind of popularity of Queequeg’s personality. Ishmael then carries on on to claim, “if he had not been a small degree civilized, he probably would not have got troubled him self with boot styles at all” (70). Because shown in his descriptions of Queequeg, Ishmael does not supply a welcoming or perhaps friendly characteristics toward Queequeg. He is quick to distinguish Queequeg as a “savage, ” essentially bestowing the hostile nickname on him. Considering that the novel occurs in the mid-1800s, the word “savage” would represent a much harsh connotation. Ishmael basically feels that he’s supreme to Queequeg, which conveys Ishmael’s oblivious characteristics in the fact that he won’t know anything about Queequeg.

As the storyline progress Ishmael’s supercilious mother nature is grown through his continued conversation with Queequeg, promoting the theme of companionship as salvation. Once Queequeg begins to start his lifestyle story and Ishmael expands accustomed to Queequeg’s daily practices, Ishmael begins to understand and accept Queequeg for him self. For instance, while Queequeg participates in his individual religious activity and attracts Ishmael, Ishmael “thought he seemed anxious for [him] to join, inches but got “deliberated a short while whether, just in case he asked him” (113). Ishmael is seen to in the beginning be fairly reluctant in joining Queequeg, however Ishmael then goes on his declaration to say, “I would comply or otherwise, inch revealing that he in least views the option. In fact , Ishmael would not make virtually any critical remarks of Queequeg’s religious philosophy, instead Ishmael grows as a result experience and finally calls himself and Queequeg a “cosy, loving couple, ” showing that the companionship is beginning to liberate Ishmael from the ignorant, ignorant frame of mind he had in the beginning.

Looking even more into the novel, Ishmael matured much more in his behavior, further more exposing the companionship since salvation since the novel’s motif. After meeting Chief Ahab, Queequeg’s bravery and quick activities in the coming predicament allows Ishmael to finally see the good in him. Ishmael says that “all hands the best performer Queequeg a noble trump ¦ from that hour I clove to Queequeg like a barnacle, inches to show his newfound admiration for Queequeg (130). This advancement elucidates just how much Ishmael really matured. He could be accepting of Queequeg, and even appears to be not judgmental but rather open-eyed to the concepts he considers, such as regarding religion, Ishmael states “we good Presbyterian Christians must be charitable in these things, but not fancy themselves so vastly superior to various other mortals” (166). Ishmael’s cultivated nature could have only recently been developed through Queequeg’s ongoing resilience in working with Ishmael’s unique personality.

Throughout the novel, Ishmael stage of developments is owed to the deepening friendship he offers with Queequeg. Queequeg enables Ishmael to undergo life-changing experiences that enable Ishmael to raise his thoughts through steady communication and expression of recent activities Ishmael has not found.
