What he found, contrary to Europe, is that the American social ethic was not based on aristocracy, in addition to fact Us citizens seemed to possess a deep-seated fear and loathing of European games (at least the middle and common classes). Instead, Irishism was depending on a system by which hard work and money-making (e. g. intense capitalism) was the dominant ethic of the time. Through this period of revolutionary change and development, he perceived that the common (free) person never deferred to elites and where one was paid for being a greedy individualist. He writes: “Among a democratic people, where there is not a hereditary prosperity, every person works to earn a living Labor is saved in honor; the prejudice is definitely not against but in their favor” (Ibid., 398).

Precisely what is also interesting is that, at times, no matter how neutral a famous or sociological account portends, what is ruled out is often as crucial as what is included. There was, simply by all accounts, a clear upper class in the To the south – based upon money, property, and electric power. This upper class controlled slaves, vast prosperity through farms, and was tied even more to Great Britain in some ways than it was to the northern groupe. De Tocqueville was at least somewhat aware about this but thought that the direction of America was in a way that the philosophical ideals of the North could move not simply Westward, yet South as well. He did find a population that was democratizing, and swiftly, which discussed why America was and so very different coming from Europe. What he would not see, although, was that it will take an incredibly bloody and vicious warfare, the killing of a Leader, and over 10 years of plans designed to put America back again to also begin to understand what he thought was just around the corner. To his credit, though, when he observed by Europe the events leading to the Civil War he known:

I do certainly not think it is personally, a foreigner, to indicate to the Usa the time, the measures, or maybe the men by simply whom Slavery shall be abolishedStill, as the persevering opponent of despotism everywhere, and under almost all its forms, I was pained and astonished by the fact that the freest people in the world is definitely, at the present time, nearly the only one among civilized and Christian international locations which yet maintains personal servitude; which while serfdom itself is all about disappearing, in which it has not really already vanished, from the many degraded international locations of The european union.

An old and sincere friend of America, I i am uneasy for seeing Slavery retard her progress, tarnish her glory, furnish biceps and triceps to her detractors, compromise the near future career of the Union which is the guaranty of her security and success, and mention beforehand to her, to all her enemies, the location where they may be to reach. As a person, too, I am relocated at the vision of mans degradation simply by man, and I hope to view the day if the law can grant similar civil freedom to all the inhabitants of the same empire, because God accord the freedom with the will, devoid of distinction, to the dwellers upon earth (Letters on American Slavery, 2006).

Really, sobre Tocqueville would not have America wrong just as much as he had a far more optimistic and rose-colored picture of the moments. He noticed the country while so totally different from Europe that almost anything in the pursuit of democracy and equality was justified – so long as it was moving in the right path.
