Amanda Wingfield and Hermosa Loman
Assessing and Contrasting Mothers in Tennessee Williams’s the Cup Menagerie and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman
Two plays from your 1940’s, Tn William’s The Glass Menagerie (1944) and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (1949), although much different in sculpt and content, both have female characters who wish only the perfect for their families, yet live totally in the past. Amanda recalls her youth filled with “gentlemen callers, ” and cannot find Laura’s (or Tom’s) advantages and skills. Linda avoids confronting Willy about his plan to destroy himself. The two refuse to discover their families because they are. In this article, I will compare Amanda and Linda, when it comes to their hopes and wants for, and treatment of, their families.
As Tennessee Williams identifies Amanda Wingfield in the List of Characters, “Amanda, having did not establish exposure to reality, continues to live vitally in her illusions” (The Glass Menagerie, p. 1541). The perform is told about by Ben, who plays a dual role of narrator and major character. We see Amanda through his eyes: she actually is motherly yet overbearing; worried yet handling. She is as well quite buzzing and specific in her conversation (although she does not listen well to others). As she tells Jeff at supper, for example “chew your food and offer your salivary glands a chance to function! inches (p. 1544).
Amanda reveals at Mary and Laura, not with them. Consequently, she misses various chances to encourage her children’s true talents. Jeff craves excitement, adventure, and variety. But instead of encouraging Tom to get a creative funnel for these restless yearnings, Amanda disparages them. Early on, Laura admits she gets cut category:

Recently I’ve been spending most of my own afternoons in… that big glass housed where they raise the warm flowers. (p. 1548)
Below, Laura indicators interest in artwork; animals; film; and raising flowers. Nevertheless all Amanda can say is: “You performed all this to deceive me personally, just for the deception? inches (p. 1548). She is entirely self-centered in her frustration, and not thinking at all regarding Laura their self, or what Laura’s accurate interests happen to be or what she might actually enjoy performing. Consumed as she is by self-pity, and stuck in her previous, Amanda simply cannot see either Tom or Laura separate human beings, impartial from very little.
Linda Loman, Willy’s long-suffering wife in Death of a Salesman, though less away of feel than Amanda, is unable to deal with Willy, the main person in her existence, about the depth of his unhappiness, or his plan to dedicate suicide. When ever Linda locates evidence in the garage of Willy’s program, instead of requiring that Willy level with her, and after that should look for outside support, Linda
