Colonial and Post Colonial Short Tales

In the 19th and twentieth centuries, much of the world was divided and compartmentalized. Empire nations colonized lands across the world creating cultures which were based on differentiation and racial inequality. In a colonized nation, the people would be made up of the colonizers who were the ethnic and racial electricity and the colonized that would be deemed ethnically poor. In the brief stories “Going to Exile” by writer Liam O’Flaherty and “The Day They will Burnt the Books” by simply Jean Rhys, the writers relate brief narratives which usually reflect the racial prejudices and conflicts that were bubbling beneath, and frequently times previously mentioned, the surface of colonized countries.

In colonial time literature, one of many dilemmas that can come up generally is the problem of identity. People who are colonized are forced to develop for themselves a dual personality. Although the child feels some sadness at leaving his father, he does not at this time comprehend the more meaning behind his giving. To the dad, it is as though there are two distinct groups: the Irish and the People in america and Michael’s leaving is a form of treachery.

This concept of ethnic differentiation is repeated in the second story. In “The Day They Burned the Literature, ” Rhys begins the storyline describing a character named Mister. Sawyer. This kind of man can be married into a native Carribbean woman and mistreats her. However , treatments does not affect the narrator a whole lot as the very fact that this light man offers married an associate of the colonized population. “They (the area population) hardly ever decided how come he had chosen to settle in a place this individual didn’t like and to marry a girl woman” (Rhys). The author repay this assertion by complimenting the woman, however the inequalities with the society that are determined by racial differences are still obvious.
