Manus may be the son of Hugh, buddy of Owen and a teacher at the hedge institution. * In the beginning there is a wonderful contrast involving the brothers, nevertheless , as the play progresses it is apparent that they have implemented each others characteristics. Manus has strong views on the re identifying of Irish towns but they are very different to the people belonging to Owen. Manus is definitely angry together with the English idea that the Irish town brands are incorrect whereas Owen considers it to be only a name Manus is described as having a zeal pertaining to teaching and this supported by his relationship with Sarah. It can be clear that Sarah offers deeper feelings for Manus than a regular teacher and student romance.

Manus also seems to truly look after Sarah in fact it is debatable if one of Manus’ reasons for going out of the hedge school was because he did not want his feelings pertaining to Sarah to advance. Because the play progresses this relationship dips as Maire and Yolland (an English language man) along with love. The moment Manus discovers about this relationship he is greatly hurt which leads to him leaving the town of Baile Beag and running far from his concerns. * There are numerous examples throughout the play the moment Manus makes sacrifices pertaining to the people from the people in the hedge university. One such case in point is when ever his daddy Hugh applies for a new job with the national school. Manus feels he can not apply (even though he would probably be better suited for the job) as he will be going against his father’s wants.

This angers Maire as Manus promised her he’d go for the task. This is one of the first apparent indications of a strain becoming put on their particular relationship, which will would eventually lead to their downfall. Words that describe Manus: optimist, kind, thoughtful, encouraging.
