Athens and Sparta: Similarities and Differences

By Mike Mizov

One of the greatest city states of them all was the town state of Athens

that we take many of our modern methods. Their federal government was a complete

democracy in which they had a great assembly was all male citizens more than 25 years outdated

they had the council of five hundred which has been chosen simply by lot of persons over 40

and they recommended laws for the assembly. After that there was the court high

were zero judges plus the juries had been very large, the archons which were the seven

people with the most power before the assembly got it faraway from them.

The Athenians descended from the Ionians in the attica region. All their

city was mainly situated on acropolis. They’d all around education which supposed

everyone was entitled to education not only the wealthy. They were as well concerned

with money and they also had unsuccessful soil which meant they might have to

find other ways for making money, therefore they started to be sea traders.

Unlike Sparta their slaves had legal rights which supposed they could be

liberated if the owners of them thought to do so. Additionally, they had Draconian laws which will

were fairly tough regulations and sometimes unfair. Since they got slaves that they had a

large amount of time to pursue cultural interests and led their contemporary society forward

intellectually, so that they got into producing dramatic takes on for their satisfaction.

There were three classes of individuals in Athens the 1st class were

Residents which were over age nineteen, then there have been Metics which were considered

the middle class. Then there were slaves which was regarding as low as you may go.

So all in all you will notice Athens is really a lot different then simply Sparta that i

will tell you about now.

Spartis government was a lot different then Athens they had the five

ephors who were overseers and had been the real rulers of Tempas. Then came the

council of Elders which was made up of 28 males over 70 and they suggested laws to

the assembly. Then simply there were kings who were elected by the assemblage and served

as excessive priests, all judges, and military services commanders. After that came mount which were

most citizens above 30 who also elected representatives and the very best on major policies. Their very own

government was Totalitarian.

The Spartans originated from the Dorians and had been located in the Laconia

area. Their metropolis was constructed in a valley and had simply no walls since they said

they will could defend from an invaders. As opposed to the Athenians their garden soil supported

farming but they were culturally backward, which means we all never acquired anything out

of their societys way of life. They had no true family life and were very

militaristic. They chatted in Laconic phrases which in turn meant they answered or spoke

in as little words and phrases as possible (ex. yes, zero, maybe, etc . ). They were forced to

marry at 31 so that they could generate as many kids as possible and unhealthy

children were left to die.

The society of Spartis was consisting of citizens which are the direct

descendants with the Dorians after that there were friends and neighbors which were persons from

additional cities and nationalities living inside their towns who werent as

recognized as the citizens. Then simply thereare the Healots which are their slaves

compared to Athens their slaves were remedied less then dirt and grime. The smart and

strong slaves were put to death as a result of fear of rise ? mutiny because slaves

outnumbered people there. To help you see how culturally oppisate these two

people are.
