In the poem “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur, the speaker’s love for his daughter is analogous to a captain’s take pleasure in for his ship. The expanded metaphor can also mean that the father feels he’s holding the girl back, trapped in her room, just as the starling is trapped in the room.

The parrot escapes, finally “beating an easy course for the best window, and clearing the sill on the planet. ” The “right window” has a twice meaning. 1 interpretation is usually that the bird is merely on the right side in the room, but it could also suggest the parrot has picked the appropriate or suitable home window, figuratively, the right opportunity for the lady or the starling to get out into the world. The starling finally “cleared the sill of the world, ” or perhaps figuratively, the girl and the starling finally overcome their issues and learn to soar into the world to make something of themselves
