Chris McClendon 12/11/09 3rd Hour The Qualities of Hero What makes Annie Sullivan significant? The traits that she revealed in The Miracle Worker simply by William Gibson made her significant. With this story she showed a large number of characteristics which will make her exclusive in comparison to different teachers. Being half window blind herself, your woman could connect with Helen relatively.

Annie Sullivan exemplified various heroic attributes such as tolerance, perseverance, and self-determination. First, Annie Sullivan showed persistence in many several situations over the story.

Tolerance appeared through this play the moment Annie expected to stay with Helen, alone in the log cabin for two several weeks. She mentioned, “Two weeks, for just one miracle. (Act II). Helen examined Annie’s patience when choosing never to cooperate with her. They got into various altercations, but still remained affected person. Helen gained the most by Annie’s perseverance. Sullivan’s tolerance helped her to teach Helen. When Helen tested Annie’s patience, she remained calm and continued to tolerate Helen’s behavior. This model shows how Annie exemplified patience in “The Miraculous Worker.

One more characteristic that Annie showed in this story included perseverance. Annie persevered during the scene where she tried to teach Helen how to fold the napkin. Once she began, Helen would not seem to interact to sign dialect or flip the paper napkin. After a few days, she made an appearance hopeless to her parents. Sullivan still continued to try and train her through all the obstructions, even when the Kellers wished her to leave. “The room’s a wreck, although her paper napkin is collapsed. (Act II). Annie stated this kind of after she successfully trained Helen the right way to fold a napkin.

Even though the Kellers don’t believe in Annie, and Helen seemed to not really respond to her teaching, Annie still ongoing to try and teach her. Plainly, Annie Sullivan showed perseverance in this account. Lastly, Sullivan showed the quality of self-determination. Annie showed self-sufficiency throughout the whole play. A specific example will be when the Kellers thought that Annie would give up, but the lady didn’t. “Here, give up, why I just today saw what should be done, to start! (Act II). Annie said this kind of to the Kellers when they thought that all she might have given up.

Sullivan was decided to teach Sue sign terminology. She continued to be persistent and did not stop. At this point Annie would do whatever the girl had to do to train Helen signal language. The lady wanted to stay alone in the cabin with Helen even though the Kellers compared with. This self-determination helped Sue to learn and pay more focus on Annie. This is one way Annie Sullivan showed self-determination. In conclusion, Annie Sullivan illuminated many features that would make one see her while heroic. Three specific instances of these traits are endurance, perseverance, and self-determination.

Sullivan shows these characteristics through the entire perform. The world might be a better place if generally there more persons showed the traits that Annie Sullivan did. I agree with Robert Brustein if he states, “Gibson possesses considerable literary and dramatic presents and a great integrity of the highest order. In addition , this individual brings to his works authentic compassion, wit, bite and humor, and a lively, literate the entire style equaled by couple of American dramatists. in the New Republic. When Bill Gibson published this perform he employed much compassion and crisis. Lastly, I am thankful for being capable of read this transcendental play.
