He starts his explanations of the 1st two ladies and dismisses them intended for the lack of interest. He understands that giving up is a gesture made that has to be adopted through.

When he stands outside of the store, the romantic hero has perished within him. The girls have passed away and he realises the situation he features put him self in and the financial straits he offers put his parents in. Updike has given the reader a glance to a situation that changed Sammy’s life once and for all. It emphasises how selections can change a person’s life and how at that level can seem unimportant.
