It is sad that in our society, conformity and assimilation have triggered schisms in our communities. The Calgary Example is one such example. Psychologically ill people who find themselves marginalized deal with a myriad of problems that are belittled and badly understood. Those of us who are in a position to produce a positive contribution to the lives of psychologically ill community members, would prefer to choose to spend our attempts on more esthetically pleasing charities. It seems that mainstream society would rather view the issues surrounding the mentally ill basically go away and remain disregarded.

As social personnel, it is the responsibility to make certain this does not continue. In the pursuing pages all of us will check out the issues, tasks of the community, and the bigger questions that arise coming from creating awareness on the concern of the mentally ill populace. The Calgary case study is useful in showing the possibilities that community action and understanding can create.

It is interesting to note that over the past few hundred years, the mentally ill have been underneath the public microscope. The treatment and intervention in to the lives with the mentally ill have come full circle. The homeless lunatics of the 1st half of the millennium were, by the 1700s staying institutionalized.

This process acquired its main ups and downs, while at the times it had been publicly financed, ending up a situation run procedure by the 1900s. During the time of de-institutionalization, mentally sick people were afforded more meant dignity and private freedoms. This kind of however , anordna led to the rise in the situation we see in Calgary-joblessness, homelessness, and social outrage for those themselves. See a simplified edition of the great the psychologically ill in Figure 1 .

Before we are able to fully realize the potential of the Calgary circumstance we must initial understand the concerns involved. We now have two differing sides for the issue, and the two factors are polarized as to what the issues really are. The first part involves the mentally sick themselves.

Their issues are:

, Homelessness (people of the possess not)

, Cost of living outweighs their limited (if any) income

, Nothing to do/unaware of their potential contribution to society

, No one appears to care/no a single wants all of them in their community

, They are at an age group where they are really most able and fruitful (adulthood)

The community at large seems to be having the next issues:

, Frustration with mentally unwell homeless littering the street (this is my personal choice of words)

, Insecure property beliefs concerning the property owners

, They desire the Government to take responsibility to get the situation

, Thriving region wants the homeless to get relocated

, Retirement and family area desired to remain this sort of (age and generation gap between this group as well as the other)

, High cost neighborhood (people in the have)

The first concern I would address as a cultural worker is the poor health/mental health with the street persons. If there is a problem with medication not being considered, then that issue must be addressed. Apparently many people are living without proper usage of the Treatment that we every take for granted, and this access should be moved into the city. This approach would not just benefit the mentally unwell, but the remaining portion of the community as well. Community health centers involve the entire array of people that stay in this down-town area, and they are a great place for people being intermingled rather than segregated.

It is obvious from looking at the issues concerning both groups of people that a giant schism has occurred between them.

It may be that preconceived ideas or biases have taken above the mindset of 1 or both factions. As being a social employee, the first thing that should be addressed is the fact fact. Training the two teams on the benefit of the other is a great place to start. After the awareness method is started, many other valuable tools may also be implemented.

The have community is made up of a large proportion of retired people. This could be seen as.
