In the essay “A Homemade Education, ” Malcolm X begins with outlining the struggles of how he taught him self to read and write in prison with a dictionary and wrote from every night. This individual discusses just how his interest and solve to be “able to read and understand”(Malcom 227). Literature \ him to a freedom which usually he had hardly ever felt just before. As he implemented the theories of Elijah Muhammad, he found astonishing interest in dark-colored history and captivity. His tone obviously changes from the beginning which can be kind of uniformed individual he once was into a powerful approach to racism in the usa and helped him to get civil and political privileges for Africa Americans.

While having been in jail, he spent most of his time reading and replicating from the dictionary then examining it back to himself many times. As his vocabulary expanded, finally he was able to browse books and understand all of them. As a result, this individual describes his feeling of achievement to the readers by suggesting “in fact, up to in that case, I by no means had been thus truly totally free in my life” (Malcom 227).

Teachings of Elijah Muhammad influenced an interest pertaining to Malcolm X in black history, slavery, and the white-colored man’s brutalities and lust in the world. Nevertheless , since he doesn’t considercarefully what good things the white mankind has done with this world, he develops his essay by dislike to white men. The audience can easily feel that when he states, “book after book showed me how the light man got brought after the world’s black, darkish, red, and yellow people every variety of the sufferings of fermage. I saw how since the 16th century, the so called “Christian trader” white colored man began to ply the seas in his lust pertaining to Asian and African empires, and plunder, and power”(Malcom 231).

Through his dissertation, the audience can clearly see that the literacy changed his life and encouraged him to find an interest in history. And it is not just background, but the history which white men omitted. He became further considering this subject, and found himself research more and more. The readers may know that his interest never slowed down possibly years afterwards, and he gives all the credit for the homemade education that this individual gave himself in prison. By using his experience, historic references, and specific people, he hopes to get the readers to seek know-how over important things that involve their very own lives as a new world was opened to him through the homemade education.
